Make mascarpone cream

Beat cream with sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks, then fold in mascarpone.

Soak lady fingers

Quickly dip each lady finger in espresso (optionally with liqueur) on both sides without soaking.

Do not let lady fingers soak or they will become soggy.

Layer first layer

Arrange soaked lady fingers in an even layer in an 8×8 inch dish and spread half the mascarpone cream on top.

Add another layer of soaked lady fingers and the remaining mascarpone cream.

Dust and chill

Dust the top generously with cocoa powder using a fine mesh strainer and refrigerate at least 3-4 hours or overnight.
