Preheat the oven to 175°C and prepare two 20cm round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.

Cream butter and sugar

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Mix dry ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.

Alternate wet and dry ingredients

Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with flour.
